Useful: Cameras: Lens quality

When purchasing a camera, you'll be faced with many options and features. One important feature is the 'zoom' capability which may be expressed as a combination of 'optical' and 'digital' zoom.

  1. "Optical Zoom" occurs by the movement of the lens in the camera. It gives you a much better quality picture. It's similar to using a pair of binoculars to see something far away...clear and sharp.
  2. "Digital Zoom" is not a result of any lens movement. It's sort of like the picture is being stretched out to give you a close up look at something smaller in the picture....but this 'stretching' reduces the quality. It's similar to the process of trying to make an enlargement on a copy machine. Have you ever tried to 'zoom' in on something using a copy machine, and after 'zooming' in on a copy of a copy...you find that it becomes blurry? That's loss of quality. Although it's OK for some cases, I've turned off the digital zoom feature on my camera so I'm not disappointed.
  3. ol>Most cameras have a combination of optical and digital zoom. For example, the Canon PowerShot 7.1 describes its lens as "3.6x optical, 4.1x digital, for a 14.8x total zoom". (The 3.6 is multiplied by the 4.1 to get 14.8.)

When taking a picture, the camera uses the 'optical' zoom first, and then when it has 'zoomed' as far as it can go, it jumps into 'digital' zoom to create the impression that you're even closer to the subject.

    So here are two tips:

    1. When buying a camera, be sure to find out how much 'optical zoom' it has.
    2. Cameras that have a combination of 'optical' and 'digital' zoom usually have a way for you to 'turn off' the digital zoom, so that you're only using the optical zoom (which is the better quality zoom).
