Lens Zoom - fixed, optical zoom or digital zoom? Getting in close to your subject is one of the secrets to taking better photos. Fixed focus lenses on cheap cameras require perambulatory zoom – i.e walk in closer to your subject! Optical zoom is highly desirable, but more expensive. Mid-range cameras typically have up to 3x optical zoom, which is fine for many users. However, those wanting to shoot outdoor scenes, wildlife or sporting events will need higher zoom ratios. Cameras with 5x to 12x zoom are available at the higher end of the market. Digital zoom is not real zoom, it merely crops to the central part of the image, throwing away the pixels around the edges and resulting in lower resolution, softer or jaggy looking images. |
